Who Jesus is

From darkness to light
Patience

Who Jesus said He was, in His own words.

Take as long as you need with this page. Nobody is counting, and nothing here is asking you to decide today.

Most people have an opinion about Jesus that they inherited rather than examined. A good teacher, a kind man, a myth, a threat. The trouble is that none of those survives reading what He actually said about Himself.

He did not present Himself as one voice among many. He said He was the way to God, that He had authority to forgive sins, and that He would be killed and would rise. People were either offended by Him or they worshipped Him. Very few found Him easy to ignore.

John 14:6

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Mark 2:10 and 11

The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.

John 10:11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

The problem He came to solve

Not that we are unhappy, though we often are. The problem is that we are guilty, we know it, and we have built our lives around not thinking about it. Sin is more than a list of small failures. It is the habit of putting ourselves where God should be, and it separates us from Him.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

What He did about it

He took the punishment that belonged to us. That is what the cross was: the innocent one standing in the place of the guilty, willingly, before we had asked and before we were sorry. Three days later the grave was empty. Everything else depends on whether that is true.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

What He asks of you

Not that you clean yourself up first. He asks you to turn: to stop defending yourself, to admit what is true, and to trust Him with it. That is repentance and faith, and there has never been anything to pay.

Whoever comes to me I will never drive away. John 6:37

Isaiah 55:6

Seek the LORD while he may be found. Call on him while he is near.
